Surfing at the beautiful beaches of Punta Hermosa

Peru has one of the world's most ancient surf cultures, dating back thousands of years. However, its beaches have been little-known to the rest of the world -- until recently. Over recent years, international surfers have been catching up on what is on offer here, with Punta Hermosa being one of the most celebrated areas.

The beaches here are about an hour's drive south of Lima's central area. If you are staying at Pariwana's Lima hostel, you can make the trip easily by bus, with one option being to buy a combi ticket and change buses at Puente Atacongo. Staff at the hostel will be able to advise you on which buses to take.

Punta Hermosa is known as one of the best locations to ride the waves in Peru, with a choice of over 20 breaks here and at San Bartolo, within just a few miles. Among these is the world-famous Pico Alto, which is the largest wave off the South American coast. Other well-known breaks include Punta Rocas, Kon Tiki, La Isla and many more. There are waves which are ideal for everyone from beginners to experts.

The winds are usually light, so you are likely to find perfect conditions for surfing action. Be aware, though, that it can be quite cool and damp at some times of year. It is possible to rent wetsuits, boards and any other gear you need either in Punta Hermosa or at one of the surf shops in Lima.
